drilling and tapping2018

As the UK’s biggest utility event approaches, we are delighted to once again be involved with the annual ‘Drilling and Tapping’ competition, during Utility Week Live at the end of May, alongside Aliaxis group company Philmac.

The Drilling and Tapping event is a team trial, in which each team of two is required to drill and tap a 150mm diameter main under available pressure, together with completing the installation of a simulated service connection.

Installing a secure service connection is integral to any new water mains network so it is crucial that the products used on-site are replicated in the competition to ensure competitors can create a robust and reliable connection. As a result, our PE pipe, along with fittings from Philmac, will be utilised to make the service connection.

Our blue PE80 pipe in 25mm diameter will be utilised, as its ease of handling capabilities make it ideal for a competition in which teams are racing against the clock. While the flexibility of Philmac’s 3G fitting has seen it selected year after year as the fitting of choice for the competition, as its true universal appeal sees it able to connect any standard of PE pipe including metric, imperial, heavy gauge, low and high density.

More than 10 teams from water companies across the UK will battle it out to be crowned champion to knock 2018 winners, Northumbrian Water, off the top spot.

Commenting on the competition, our Infrastructure Segment Manager, James Roper, said: “This competition has long been a focal point of the event and we are delighted to once again be part of it this year. The flexibility of our PE pipe and fittings make them an ideal fit for a time trial competition. In addition to the competition, the activity also provides installers the opportunity to work with products and materials they may not have done previously, enhancing their product knowledge and experience when they return to site.”
