As Utility Week Live approaches at the end of May, all eyes will be on the annual ‘Drilling and Tapping’ competition, which this year plays host to the World Water Cup. We are delighted to be involved in such a popular event, alongside our sister group company Philmac.

The Drilling and Tapping event is a team trial, in which each team of two is required to drill and tap a 150mm diameter main under available pressure, together with completing the installation of a simulated service connection.

Installing a secure service connection is integral to any new water mains network so it is crucial that the products used on-site are replicated in the competition to ensure competitors can create a robust and reliable connection. As a result, our PE pipe, along with fittings from Philmac, will be utilised to make the service connection.

Our standard blue PE80 pipe in 25mm diameter will be utilised, as its ease of handling capabilities make it ideal for a competition in which teams are racing against the clock. While the flexibility of Philmac’s 3G fitting has seen it selected year after year as the fitting of choice for the competition, as its true universal appeal sees it able to connect any standard of PE pipe including metric, imperial, heavy gauge, low and high density class C or D.

While more than 15 teams from water companies across the UK will battle it out to be crowned champion, the 2016 winners from Anglian Water will also go head to head against the reigning champions from the USA and Holland to take the World Water Cup title. Each team will not only be required to create a connection using their own country’s standard process, but also repeat the task using the method the other two competing countries adopt, which will see the teams from USA and Holland getting to grips with Philmac and GPS products.

Commenting on the competition, our head of product marketing, Dominic O’Sullivan said: “This competition has long been a focal point of the event and we are delighted to once again be part of it this year. In addition to the competition, the activity also provides installers the opportunity to work with products and materials they may not have done previously, enhancing their product knowledge and experience when they return to site.”

“Laura Staff, brand manager for Philmac, added: “Being involved in this event is a natural fit for us; the quick and simple installation of our 3G fitting makes it the ideal product for a time trial competition. While it is also a fantastic platform to showcase the benefits of PE pipe and fittings for water applications to an international audience during the World Water Cup event.”
